3 Def Rule

Postby Hannes » October 6th, 2023, 4:24 pm

We had the current 3def rule for a very long time, but still there are periodic discussions about it.
One clear change would be to play with a custom map, which has a drawn line the 4th player of the defending team is not allowed to cross/or touch at all.

This would make the 3def rule way simpler but also the game somewhat more rigid.

so far the line is drawn here, it could be moved closer to the goals for the strict line.
The line for the possible new map would be more like a soft green to be not distracting.

If the custom map gets a majority, where exactly the line would be if its no crossing or no touching can be decided afterwards.

About the rigid feeling, maybe the line interpretation could be just a reminder for ST, (Whenever he cross/touch the line, he won't be able to touch any player in this area without controlling the ball) but not a strict line which u aren't allowed to cross it at all. So you will still have the chance to gather cleared balls in that area. Generally rules are same, but the line can just be a measure for rule breaking, which we never had.

There are more details to be discussed. It will be nice if more people give their opinions about this one except the voting.

If you are planning a different form of cup competition, as I saw that you included big-easy and futsal in the vote, wouldn't it be better to completely change the competition system and focus entirely on big-easy without any rules?

Today, Haxball is at such a stage that it will be very difficult to maintain the competition without any form of change, so if you do not encourage new players to play in the league, the forum will die a natural death because there are fewer and fewer people closely associated with this league.

Many public players have no idea about 3def, and the mere thought of the rule certainly doesn't encourage them to play. Playing on the big-easy map means that the entry threshold will simply be lower. There is also the issue of gameplay; it will be more open thanks to a larger goal and the constant possibility of playing in the square, which simply gives more options in combination play.

3def dominated for so many years, but the current standards are such that in public rooms players play on huge or 3vs3 maps, and 3def rooms were never crowded cause new players were banned from the start due to the fact that they misinterpreted the rules.

Wouldn't such a custom map prevent these kind of misinterpretations from the start?

And views on the gameplay is just very opinion based, big easy tends to be have even more spamming, so its different yes, but not better?

It is also worth taking into account the fact that for an outsider, this gameplay option may be unattractive, and changing the map could be an incentive for others to try to compete. If you only care about minor improvements and not a revolution, focus on regularity in all statistics updates, cause this is the basis.

Here, teams have been built on the basis of the same players for years, while on Discord there is currently a fraction of teams that have never played on feedme, because it is easier for them to get there, and it is also worth paying attention to the form of communication, switching to Discord at the expense of Teamspeak will be an opportunity to reach another group of potential players.

These are no longer the times when people fascinated by the game looked for and registered for leagues, today they need to be encouraged somehow, and outdated forms of communication don't help.

Thats useful feedback Haku, but there's already a topic about exactly this kind of discussion. Lets keep this one for the specific poll so it can be easily traceable if there are any other 3def line suggestions and opinions.
