The last time anyone bothered to make a report on Somalia (in 2001), their HDI coefficient was 0.284, which makes it literally the most backwards country in the world. So, yeah, all of the countries I mentioned, including North Korea, are significantly more developed than Somalia.

And, yes, 'shithole' generally is not a term used by the UN Development Programme.

Those are not some 'wikipedia stats', those are globally recognized scientific indicators that are posted on wikipedia. It's just much more condensed/well-organized and user-friendly there than on the original sites.

Attracting tourists is not a measure of success.

As for the meddling kids, Somalia is pretty much a tribal society. It's primitive. Just like Afghanistan or some regions in Oceania, they haven't dropped the tribe thing, which is a very ineffective and unstable political system. Europe gradually transformed into states in Middle Ages 500+ years ago. After that we went through a period of nationalism. Now we're trying to build a pan-European identity with the EU, while you guys still slash each other with machetes because of an allegiance to the wrong tribe.

If that's not being backwards, then I don't know what backwards is.
